- Lead vocal level is too low
- Instruments mask the presence range
- Phrases are not automated

- Raise or automate the vocal before adding more compression
- Pull competing guitars or keys down during lyrics
- Check the vocal at a quiet monitor level

Check at low volume
Turn the monitor level down and notice what remains readable without loudness helping it.
Mute competing instruments
Mute likely masking parts one at a time and listen for the problem clearing up before adding processing.
Compare verse vs chorus
Check whether the problem appears only when the arrangement gets denser or the hook arrives.
Compare with a reference track
Level-match a similar release and compare balance, tone, low end, width, and loudness without chasing volume.
