Diagnosis guide

Listen. Diagnose. Check first.

Why do my strings sound fake?

Fake strings often need musical phrasing and dynamics before new processing.

Start here

Work through the checks before choosing a processor. The recommendations below are supporting options, not a shortcut around the diagnosis.

Try this before adding another plugin.

What you are hearing

Fake strings usually come from performance data first: flat dynamics, wrong articulation, rigid timing, or writing outside the library's strengths.

Likely causes

  • MIDI dynamics are flat
  • Notes are too quantized
  • Wrong articulation or register

Check first

  • Shape velocity and expression before mixing
  • Use articulations that match the phrase
  • Humanize note starts and endings

Listening checks

Compare with a reference track

Level-match a similar release and compare balance, tone, low end, width, and loudness without chasing volume.

Compare verse vs chorus

Check whether the problem appears only when the arrangement gets denser or the hook arrives.

Bypass processing

Bypass the suspected EQ, compressor, clipper, limiter, reverb, or bus chain and listen for the problem changing.

Mixing tip

Realism usually improves more from MIDI performance than from EQ.

Use this as a diagnosis path, not a promise that one plugin will fix the sound.

Engineer's read

String realism usually improves more from musical programming than from mix processing.

Most likely

  • MIDI performance lacks natural dynamics
  • Articulation, timing, or register does not match the phrase

Also check

  • Velocity and expression curves
  • Quantized note starts and endings
  • Room placement after the performance works

Try first

  • Shape expression and velocity
  • Humanize note starts and endings
  • Choose articulations that fit the phrase
  • Only then adjust space and tone
