Why does my master sound harsh?
A harsh master often means the limiter, clipper, bright EQ, or the original mix is pushing the upper mids too hard.

What you are hearing
Master sounds harsh usually means the listener is noticing mastering harshness in the mastering area. Treat it as a listening clue first, then test the likely causes in context.
Likely causes
- Limiter or clipper is pushed too hard
- Too much high-mid EQ
- Bright reference mismatch
- Excessive saturation
- Monitoring is too loud
- A harsh mix is already entering the mastering chain
Check first
- Compare against a reference at matched loudness
- Bypass the limiter or clipper and check whether harshness remains
- Reduce monitoring level
- Check 2-5 kHz and upper treble buildup
- Confirm the mix is not already harsh before mastering
Mixing tip
If the mix is already harsh, fix the mix before mastering. Mastering tools should not be asked to hide a mix-stage problem.
