A weak kick may be a source problem, a transient problem, a low-end balance problem, or a masking problem with the bass.
Likely causes
- Transient is too soft
- Kick level is too low
- Bass masks the attack or body
Check first
- Balance kick and bass in mono
- Check the source sample or recording
- Turn down competing low-end elements
Listening checks
Listen in mono
Collapse the mix to mono and check whether the focal element, kick, bass, or important midrange disappears.
Check small-speaker translation
Listen on a small speaker or band-limited monitor path to confirm whether harmonics and midrange cues survive.
Mute competing instruments
Mute likely masking parts one at a time and listen for the problem clearing up before adding processing.
Compare with a reference track
Level-match a similar release and compare balance, tone, low end, width, and loudness without chasing volume.

Decide whether the kick needs click, thump, or sub before boosting everything.
